Narozen 3. 7. 1854 v Hukvaldech jako deváté dítě venkovského učitele, přišel do Brna v jedenácti letech, aby zde získal důkladné hudební vzdělání ve fundaci starobrněnského kláštera, a s Brnem spojil celý svůj život.
